Once you have secured a position with an employer you will need to take the following steps to register as an Australian apprentice. You may also contact us if you wish to transfer to our college.
Step 1 Contact your preferred Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) An Australian Apprenticeship Centre will assist you and your employer to complete the training contract and can be contacted on 13 38 73.
Step 2 Nominate a hairdressing college as your Registered Training Organisation Training providers deliver off-the-job training to apprentices and trainees. We will work with you and your employer to help develop a training plan, deliver training, assess your achievement of skills, and issue the qualification on successful completion of your apprenticeship.
Step 3 Enrol at college You will need to fill out an enrolment application form with our college. We will then develop a Training Plan documenting the roles and responsibilities of you and your employer. The training plan will set out what you will learn, where you will learn it, how you will be trained, and how and when you will be assessed. Once we receive all the necessary paperwork and DETA has issued a Training Registration Number we will organise an ORIENTATION SESSION for your apprentice.

SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICESHIPS
School based apprenticeships allow students - typically years 11 and 12 - to study for their Senior Certificate or equivalent, whilst at the same time undertaking government-approved and accredited training qualifications as paid employees. Students not only receive their Senior Certificate or equivalent at the end of year 12, but they also train towards a qualification in their chosen career. The Brisbane School of Hairdressing is a Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO) who offers school based apprenticeships at both their Brisbane CBD and Gold Coast campus. For a school-based arrangement to be created, students must have the support of their employer, their school, a supervising registered training organisation, and their parents, when negotiating the Education, Training and Employment Schedule. This schedule documents when the student is at work, school and training and must be negotiated at the same time the training contract is signed. Students who do not complete their apprenticeship or traineeship while at school are required to convert to full-time or part-time arrangements when they finish their final day at school. Once converted to full-time or part-time arrangements, appropriate award wages and conditions apply. Unlike other apprentices and trainees, school-based participants are not paid for the time spent undertaking training delivered by the supervising registered training organisation, and do not accrue entitlements to sick leave or recreation leave. However they do get paid by their employer and work up to 15 hours per week. Finding a School-Based apprenticeship can be challenging but very worthwhile. Throughout Australia there is a skill shortage of hairdressers so the government has given employers monetary incentives to hire school students. Hairdressing is
about client communication, great hairdressing skills, fashion and the ability to combine them all. Your foundation teaching is vital to how well you will achieve in your career. Training with the renown Brisbane and Gold Coast School of Hairdressing will give you access to the best educators and resources in hairdressing training.
1st Step
Find a salon where you would like to work. Make certain you look well presented with hair and make-up done & have a copy of your C.V. to give them. You want to work in this industry so you need to look fashionable.
2nd Step
Ask if you can leave your C.V. with the view to gaining part-time employment, or an
opportunity of a tea & Tidy position or a school-based apprenticeship.
3rd Step
If all goes well your employer may apprentice you as a school-based apprentice then you can choose our SRTO to do your theory. You can attend your “off-the-job” work in school holidays or on a fortnightly basis, whatever suits your timetable.
4th Step
Congratulations! You are now well on your way to being a Hairdresser. If at the end of Grade 12 you want to continue in the industry your employer can make you a permanent member of their team.
